Scent Sports (Mantrailing, Scentwork, Tracking etc)

Does anyone else do scent sports with their dogs?

I've been doing mantrailing with Bran for almost 3 years now and he really loves it, it so interesting to see him really thinking about it and working out the scent trail. I've also done a bit of Scentwork with him back in 2020-2021, and just started a little bit of Tracking too.

Basil has only done a couple of sessions of mantrailing, but he has such a different approach to Bran. Much more go go go and less time figuring it out. He's just so excited to find the person 😂

Basil sounds more like Alice, though she is getting to a stage where she works things out a bit more but they all have their own way of doing things and it does sound as if both yours love it in their own ways 😍

I have friends who do Man Trailing and some years ago a friend taught Tracking and I did some with Arnie.

Man Trailing is good fun and friends do it but I have to confess to being a bit of a wimp! I really only enjoy being out in reasonable weather and Alice refuses point blank to work in the rain.

Although Alice and I don't do tracking or Man Trailing but we have done some Scentwork Uk and do Scentwork Games.

Mainly we look for gun-oil or Kong and have been working on distractions the last few weeks with the dogs having to learn to ignore food and toys. Although we have done it for some time it's only been in the past year that she's being getting really committed.

George loved scentwork, though I only started in Covid, to give him something to do when his Trick classes were stopped - he caught on really quickly and gave a nice clear indication. One day I was chatting to our trainer and he just went off and made his first find without even being cued 🤣

Bran normally hates the rain, but when he gets to trail he seems to forget about the weather. And it's really helped with his wariness of strangers too.

Scentwork in all it's forms seems to be a really positive form of training

Like with Bran with rain and strangers Alice too has benfited in terms of calmness and focus.

For George it was really good when he was very old because despite arthritis and dementia he could still enjoy doing it.
