Discussion Topic: Why train? What to train? How long to train?
Discussion Topic: Why train? What to train? How long to train?
What's the main reason for training?
Some people seem to take their pups to a Puppy Training Class - for maybe 6 - 12wks and then stop while others continue t train for longer
What do members think?
If you train for longer why? To have a more obedient dog? To make their lives more interesting? To provide exercise? To help with behavioural problems?
There isn't a right or wrong answer, every opinion is valid
Honestly I have never been to a puppy class. Most of the training I've done has been from books or more recently from online classes. For the past 2 years or so I've been doing mantrailing with Bran, with an instructor.
I think ongoing training is more important than just going to a puppy class, to keep your dog's mind active and help with the bond. There's so much out there beyond sit/stay/down. And with terriers it's even more important to keep things interesting for them.

I've never done Mantrailing but understand, from friends who do, that it is great fun and good exercise for both handlers and dogs

From my own experience I do totally agree about Terriers and needing to keep them interested - George loved obedience and trick training and during Covid I took up scentwork with him as we could do it outdoors. We did all of them right up to when he died at 17
Alice does tricks and scentwork but hates formal obedience!

I was really lucky with Alice and found some great puppy classes, she loved them
